- Printing produces excellent color, but because the ink rests on the surface of the tag, it’s only suited for indoor or short-term applications, not extreme marine exposure.
- Etching leaves deep, durable cuts and is frequently used on heavy-duty stainless steel, though it doesn’t offer the sealed protection photo anodizing provides.
- Embossed tags raise the characters off the surface, so they stay readable even when coated in grime, which makes them a strong fit for rough handling and running series of unique identifiers. They are less suited to dense compliance matrices.
Why Photo Anodizing Wins in Saltwater
For the harshest cases, photo anodizing is built for the job. This is because, instead of printing on top of the metal, the design is photochemically embedded beneath the surface of anodized aluminum. Since the image is sealed within the anodic layer, it’s protected against physical wear, harsh chemicals, and prolonged UV exposure – with no ink to fade, no film to peel, and no coating to abrade away.
Photo anodized aluminum survives 20+ years outdoors, including in saltwater environments, while keeping barcodes, QR codes, and precise compliance data fully legible. Regular anodized aluminum typically lasts closer to 10–12 years outdoors and can fade over time because of the dyes used.
