What Goes on a Solar Inverter Nameplate

Solar inverter nameplates hold what a technician or inspector needs without opening the enclosure. The inverter manufacturer and the listing standard set the exact content. Most plates carry: 

  • Manufacturer name, model number, and country of origin
  • AC and DC ratings for voltage, current, frequency, and continuous output power
  • Listing marks and the standard the unit was tested against
  • Serial number and date code, often as a barcode, QR code, or Data Matrix, as well as text
  • Warning text for stored energy, arc flash, and more

Ultimately, the data has to stay readable for the life of the equipment. An unreadable plate at the ten-year inspection is a compliance issue and replacing it in the field on an energized array costs far more than the plate did.

UL 1741 Nameplates and the Codes Behind PV Labeling

UL 1741 nameplates carry the markings required by UL 1741, the Standard for Inverters, Converters, Controllers, and Interconnection System Equipment for Use with Distributed Energy Resources. Supplement SA covers the smart inverter grid support functions written into California Rule 21. Supplement SB, added in the 2021 edition, sets the test methods for demonstrating conformance with IEEE 1547-2018 using the procedures in IEEE 1547.1-2020. More states now require SB listing for interconnection approval.

Durability is covered separately. UL 969, the Standard for Marking and Labeling Systems, sets the permanence and legibility criteria and the test procedures a marking system has to pass. NEC 110.21(B) requires field-applied hazard markings to be permanently affixed, not handwritten, and durable enough to withstand the environment involved. That last requirement is what pushes outdoor equipment away from paper and ordinary printed labels.

Rapid shutdown labeling moves between code cycles. Under the 2017 and 2020 NEC the building placard sits in 690.56(C), and the required colors depend on which variant applies. Under the 2023 NEC it moved to 690.12(D), the reflective requirement was dropped, and no specific color is mandated so long as the text contrasts with the background.

The label at the rapid shutdown switch itself has not changed: reflective, capitalized, minimum 3/8 inch, white on red.

Solar Panel ID Labels and Module-Level Marking

Solar panel ID labels identify the module. The nameplate carries the electrical characteristics and the qualification standards the panel was tested to, such as the IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 series. A label ties that panel to a production batch and a warranty record. 

A utility scale array can carry tens of thousands of unique numbers. They must be correct, sequential, and scannable on the first pass.
